Stars George Clooney and Ellen DeGeneres called a boycott on Brunei hotels like The Dorchester, London and Le Meurice in Paris.
"Every single time we stay at or take meetings at or dine at any of these nine hotels we are putting money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery," he wrote. All nine hotels are run by a company called The Dorchester Collection, which is owned by the Brunei Investment Agency. The agency is owned by the Sultan.
The Dorchester Collection published a statement on Twitter on Wednesday saying it"does not tolerate any form of discrimination." The recent move to punish homosexuality more harshly was the first major legal reform since 2014, when Brunei began using strict Islamic law as its penal codeAlso included in the new reforms are harsher penalties for theft: the amputation of the right hand for a first offence, and a left foot amputation for a second offence. All of the new laws require multiple Muslim witnesses to crimes for the penalties to be upheld. In practice, this can make sexual crimes difficult to prosecute.
