A quarter of all species are threatened with extinction

Data journalist covering technological, societal and media topicsAcross the world, agricultural land is expanding at the expense of forests, marine stocks are being decimated by overfishing and coral reefs are clogged with plastic. In one of the most comprehensive checks on the state of the planet ever conducted, from the UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has found that human activity is having a devastating impact on the environment.

With 85% of wetlands present in 1700 lost by 2000, the amount of urban area doubling since 1992 and 100 million hectares of tropical forest disappearing between 1980 and 2000, it comes as no real surprise that the impact on wildlife and plant species has been brutal. Human activity is killing species in greater numbers than ever before and the report found that around a quarter of all species are now threatened.

As the following infographic shows, huge numbers of species are under threat on land, in the seas and in the sky. For example, 40% of amphibian species are now at risk of extinction, along with 33% of marine mammals and 14% of birds. Even though the report said that it isn't too late to make a difference, the picture is ominous. IPBES Chair, Sir Robert Watson, warned that “the health of ecosystems on which we and all other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever.
