Botched air strike kills 17 policemen and wounds 14 others during battle with Taliban outside Helmand province capital Lashkar Gah - Afghan officials

Police units, usually worse paid and equipped than the military, are a core part of Afghanistan’s security forces, taking on much of the fighting against Taliban insurgents and often suffering higher casualties than the army.

Afghan officials say an air strike killed 17 policemen by mistake during a battle with the Taliban just outside the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah in the country's southern Helmand province. Attaullah Afghan, head of the provincial council, says the air strike took place on Thursday as Afghan police were fighting the Taliban near the city. It wasn't immediately clear who carried out the air strike, Afghan or US forces.

There was no immediate response to a query to the US military in Kabul. American forces regularly back Afghan troops when asked to.A Taliban statement claimed US forces were behind it.
