Analysis: How Democratic presidential candidates are trying to win over LGBT voters
By Eugene Scott Eugene Scott Reporter covering identity politics for The Fix Email Bio Follow May 24 at 6:59 AM This week, gay activist and San Francisco politician Harvey Milk would have celebrated his 89th birthday. The first openly gay leader in California was assassinated while serving as city supervisor. To mark this anniversary, South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who is openly gay, shared a tweet celebrating Milk’s legacy, noting that Milk paved the way for his campaign.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand helped lead an effort to repeal the policy that barred openly LGBT people from military service. She now says she supports legislation like the Equality Act, which recently passed in the House, that would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. And at an event for the Human Rights Campaign, one of the country’s largest gay rights organizations, she spoke about the need to keep pressing for equality for LGBT Americans. “Let’s speak the truth — the fight for LGBTQ rights are civil rights, and until all of us are equal, none of us are equal — and none of us will receive justice,” she said.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren took to social media to promise that she’s ready to “fight” for LGBT Americans by reversing the Trump administration housing policies.
