Analysis: The unsurprising, hyperventilating dishonesty of the Trump campaign’s presentation of its opponents

President Trump at the White House on Tuesday. By Philip Bump Philip Bump National correspondent focused largely on the numbers behind politics Email Bio Follow March 6 at 9:52 AM I received an email Monday evening from the Trump Make America Great Again Committee, a fundraising vehicle for President Trump’s reelection campaign and the Republican Party.

First, though, let’s consider the presentation that leads the email. It outlines the “2020 strategy” that has been unveiled by Democratic candidates in recent weeks. More generally, though, no Democratic candidate holds all of these positions. In fact, basically none of the candidates holds any of them.

“Wide-open borders”: Trump likes to conflate “no wall” with “no border security,” which is obviously untrue. There exists wall on hundreds of miles of the border, and there are monitoring systems on much of the rest. Just because there isn’t a wall on a stretch of the border doesn’t mean it is “wide open” to immigration.

This was seized upon by Republicans, who pushed for a vote in the Senate that they hoped would force Democrats — many of whom are running for president — to take a position on the issue. The bill would have punished doctors who didn’t try to aid babies born after attempted abortions. A number of medical groups opposed the bill, saying it “represents a dangerous government intrusion into private health-care decisions.

“Government-run healthcare”: Here, we’re closer to the mark. Many prominent 2020 Democrats support Medicare-for-all, which would expand the Medicare program to cover all Americans — essentially having the government manage much of the health-care system.
