Analysis: Tillis’s reversal sums up state of Senate Republicans — few willing to cross Trump

By Paul Kane Paul Kane Senior congressional correspondent and columnist Email Bio Follow March 14 at 8:29 PM Sen. Thom Tillis took every possible position on President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to build a wall along the Mexican border.

“He’s willing to work with us,” the humbled senator, up for reelection in 2020, said in a speech just before voting against a resolution to block Trump’s emergency action. Those back-to-back rebukes, in a normal White House, might send aides scrambling across the West Wing in fear of a growing backlash against Trump, particularly with the looming conclusion of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign’s alleged ties to Russia.

Of the 22 Senate Republicans on the ballot in November 2020, Trump went 20 for 22 on the Yemen resolution and 21 for 22 on the border wall. McConnell declared that the existing law gives any president broad powers and that, rather than stand up to Trump now, Congress should consider changing the law sometime down the road. “The president is operating within existing law and the crisis on our border is all too real,” he said during a Thursday morning speech.
