Education Secretary Betsy Devos admitted to lawmakers that she knew about the harms of rolling back the Obama administration’s protections for transgender students but continued to rescind the rules anyway.
DeVos began to explain that the Office for Civil Rights is “committed” to protecting all students and making sure they are given equal access to education but was quickly interrupted by Bonamici. DeVos has been under intense scrutiny over the past few weeks for proposing an $18 million cut to the Special Olympics. The plan came as part of the Trump administration’s 2020 budget proposal, which seeks to cut at least $7 billion from education programs.
