Customs and Border Protection agents arrested more than 66,000 border crossers in February and turned away 9,700 people seeking asylum at legal ports of entry

Homeland Security officials today highlighted growing arrests at the southern border in the early weeks of 2019 in response to congressional opposition to President Donald Trump’s national emergency. In February 2018, agents arrested 48,000 people at the border and turned away 10,300 seeking asylum.“Regardless of anyone’s preferred policy outcome, the status quo is unacceptable,” CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told reporters at a press conference in which he called for congressional action.
