Brunei's version of Shariah law is set to be the harshest in the region, human-rights advocates say
HONG KONG—The oil-rich Islamic kingdom of Brunei is implementing a legal code this week that includes penalties of stoning for adultery and sodomy and allows courts to punish thieves by cutting off their right hands, reflecting a conservative shift across Islamic Southeast Asia.
Those who steal a second time will have their left foot cut off, according to a copy of the Islamic laws posted on the Brunei government’s website. They also authorize the death penalty for performing certain types of black magic.
