In 2014, in the aftermath of Lester helping the Red Sox win a World Series championship, the Red Sox made a contract offer to their best pitcher. Then-General Manager Ben Cherrington said that the Red Sox offer of $70 million over four years or about $17.5 million per year was supposed to be a starting point to the negotiations.

We are now just 14 days away from Red Sox opening day in Seattle. Sale and his negotiating team have made no timetable ultimatum. The Red Sox cannot afford to be surprised by that possibility. Hence, the Red Sox have continued to negotiate.
Right now there are five pitchers in baseball who will make at least $31 million this year and none of those have a World Series ring except Sale's Red Sox teammate David Price whose contract will pay him $31 million this season. Washington's 30-year-old Stephen Strasburg tops that list at over $38 million this year. Coincidentally Strasberg has been injury-riddled missing an average of 10 starts per season since he signed his seven-year $175 million contract when he was 27.

In all likelihood, it has gone into the 7-year, $35 million per year range or more than a million dollars for every time Sale takes the mound.
