New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday he does not expect Amazon to reconsider New York for its new headquarters, despite his efforts to win them back
that he was personally trying to woo back Amazon executives, though he declined to say if he spoke to CEO Jeff Bezos. While the governor admitted he wasn’t holding out hope for an Amazon change of heart, he said the more important message was that big business should not be scared away by vociferous local opposition such as was seen during the Amazon episode.“I have no reason to believe that Amazon is reconsidering. Would I like them to? Certainly,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo was referring in part to state Sen. Michael Gianaris, who represents the Queens district where Amazon was to build its HQ2 in exchange for roughly $3 billion in as-of-right tax subsidies. At the height of the outcry against the project, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins nominated Gianaris to the state Public Authorities Control Board. If appointed, Gianaris would have had the power to scuttle or at least hamper parts of the deal brokered by Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio.
On Thursday, Stewart-Cousins seemed to soften her stance on Amazon, indicating she, too, was hopeful the company would reconsider its plans to scrap the deal. "I have always been clear that I support job creation and was disappointed with Amazon's decision and hoped they would reconsider," she said in a statement. "I have also repeatedly indicated my willingness to work with Amazon in the best interests of our state and affected communities."“I don’t really believe it was a change of heart,” he said. “What I said to Amazon is, ‘It is irrelevant. I will get the state approvals done. I understand the local politics.
