Andrew Cuomo, flanked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the mother of a victim of the Parkland, Florida shooting, signed legislation Monday that could allow teachers and school administrators to thwart school shootings through court intervention. The "Red Flag Bill," also known as the extreme risk protection order bill, would prohibit individuals showing signs they are a threat to themselves or others from buying or possessing any type of firearm.
He touted New York's passage of the SAFE Act, which keeps guns away from convicted felons and mentally ill individuals, guarantees that private gun sales involve a background check, prohibits high-capacity magazines and assault weapons and strengthens criminal penalties for unlawful gun use. "Sandy Hook was not the last," Cuomo said. "It was not an exception.
