Sponsors acknowledge the bill has little chance of clearing the Senate, but makes a statement leading up to the 2020 elections.
Democratic lawmakers filed legislation Wednesday to end President Trump’s travel ban, asylum ban and “extreme vetting” for refugees, a measure that is unlikely to pass the Senate or gain White House approval but attempts to prevent family separations and rally support for immigration leading up to the 2020 elections.
“The fact that we still have this so-called Muslim travel ban on the books and being enforced is a stain on our reputation around the world,” he said."And it’s hurting real people.”Though the bill’s chances of passing the GOP-controlled Senate are slim, the measure offers another Democrats another route into the national conversation on immigration.
The current ban bars certain travelers from Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen. Foreigners can apply for waivers, and thousands have been granted, but Coons said thousands have also been kept out.
