5 career lessons from an undrafted NFL free agent:

You won't be introduced at a press conference after flying in on the company jet. Most college graduates are fortunate if their company pays for a moving truck versus the seven-figure signing bonus typical of elite hires in the NFL. The only way to stand out is to do something spectacular every day. And I don’t just mean on the practice field. You need to leave an impression in the weight room, during film study, really every moment you’re around that team facility, you need to be on point. So what your job comes down to on a day-to-day basis — and this is true even if you’re an established player in this league — is to not give anyone a reason to think there’s anyone who can fill the team’s needs better than you.
I graduated with an engineering degree from Purdue University. When I started at General Electric on a sales program, I was introduced to a dozen of my new peers in an orientation program. It didn’t take long to gather that I had the lowest grade point average in the group. I wasn’t going to stand out on talent and needed to differentiate with intangibles.
Can you listen? Truly listen. If a coach yells at you, are you paying attention to why he’s yelling or do you just shut down because he’s yelling? If your position coach tells the head coach or GM that you aren’t a player who listens or that you keep making the same mistake, you’re done. You are done. And your odds of getting a second chance won’t be great, because word spreads fast in this league.
You never know which connection will spring the next big opportunity. When that day comes, you won’t have much time to think about it. It is best to envision scenarios before they play out and prepare for the unexpected.
