A new study finds that people have a creative advantage when they generate many ideas and then walk away.
Most people know how it works when you try too hard in creative pursuits—you wrack your brain, bang your head against the wall, and then give up. And it’s just when you stop thinking about the problem that an idea flies into your head.
"Creativity is not instantaneous, but if incentives promote enough ideas as seeds for thought, creativity eventually emerges," said study author Steven Kachelmeier in a statement. In the study, the team had undergraduate students come up with ideas for rebus puzzles, which combine images and words to represent a common phrase . Some participants were incentivized with money based on the number of ideas they generated.
It’s not totally clear why this effect exists, but the research also suggests that coming up with more ideas may trigger divergent thinking, which is thought to be strongly related to creativity—the initial ideas of people in the “quantity” group tended to be less similar to the examples they were given. The authors write, “divergent thinking, while not synonymous with creativity, is a precursor to creativity.
