The NIT might be a source of derision for fans of big-time schools, but March's secondary college basketball tournament still matters to mid-major schools.
Back in the old days, no top seed-caliber team would decline a home game or a bid to the NIT, which used to be a New York-centric event organized by the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association. As a result, Big Apple-area and other power conference schools used to get preferred treatment in not only the selection of tournament teams but also the scheduling in hopes local schools and schools with large followings would get to Madison Square Garden. The NCAA bought the NIT from the MIBA in 2006 as part of the settlement of an antitrust lawsuit bought by the MIBA. As part of the takeover, the NCAA modeled the NIT after the NCAA Tournament, with a seeded and bracketed field, and awarded automatic bids to mid-major teams that won their regular season championship but lost the conference tournament.
“We’re playing a Power 5 school,” said Mihalich, whose team has won a school-record 27 games this season. “We’re playing a North Carolina State team that should have been in the NCAA Tournament. It’s all good.”
