Ford boosts its large SUV output, going all in on the idea that bigger is better
A 2019 Ford Expedition 4x4 on display at the 2019 Pittsburgh International Auto Show. Ford said on March 19 it will shift 550 jobs to its Kentucky Truck Plant to boost production of its Expedition and Lincoln Navigator to meet demand for its large SUVs. That appears to be Detroit’s strategy in the face of a softening new vehicle market and looming uncertainty over the evolving concept of shared mobility.
The move underscores domestic automakers’ extreme dependence on their largest and most profitable products. Still, Ford is playing catch up in this lucrative segment, which General Motors continues to dominate. The company is also in the middle of an $11 billion restructuring that at least one analyst estimates could eliminate 25,000 jobs globally, although the company has not confirmed a specific number.
GM produced its last Chevrolet Cruze in Lordstown, Ohio, earlier this month. That was part of a restructuring that will eliminate up to 14,000 workers, including salaried and union workers in five assembly and powertrain plants. For now, consumers continue to replace passenger cars with larger SUVs and pickup trucks, which generate much larger profit margins. These larger models are swallowing some of the demand for small and midsize crossovers.
