Donald Trump is expected to nominate former airline executive Steve Dickson to be FAA administrator, apparently abandoning a months-long quest to ensconce his personal pilot at the top of the agency

“The FAA has been trying to upgrade our nation’s air traffic control system for a long period of years,” Trump said at a White House event in June 2017. “But after billions and billions of tax dollars spent and the many years of delays, we are still stuck with an ancient, broken, antiquated, horrible system that doesn’t work.”
But many in the airline industry — and some on Capitol Hill — were squeamish about whether Dunkin had the executive management chops to run a large and consequential safety agency such as the FAA.as Delta Air Lines’ senior vice president of flight operations last fall. He spent a total of 27 years at the airline, and previously was an Air Force officer and fighter pilot.
When then-Rep. Bill Shuster was floating a spinoff proposal in Congress, Dickson, with Delta at the time, argued that the system wasn’t broken, putting him at odds with Trump's stated preference. “It can certainly improve, but it’s not broken,” he said in an interview with POLITICO in 2016. “We set a bunch of operational records this year, and we would not have been able to do that if the air traffic control system were broken. Having said that, there are certainly opportunities to improve.”
