A 2-year-old boy from Guatemala died at a Texas hospital, a month after being apprehended by US authorities crossing the border
The boy, who was not identified and was not in US custody at the time of his death on Tuesday, had suffered from complications of pneumonia, Tekandi Paniagua, the Guatemalan consul general in Del Rio, Texas, told CNN.Exclusive photos reveal children sleeping on the ground at Border Patrol stationThe boy is the fourth child known to have died after journeying to the US in recent months from Guatemala, where poor economic conditions have driven record numbers of migrants to the US.
On April 8, the child and mother were provided an NTA, or"notice to appear" in court documents, the official said, and the family was released on their own recognizance at the hospital, meaning they were no longer in border patrol custody.
