HBO’s “Chernobyl” tells the saga of the infamous and shocking disaster -- but it’s also about the people who were there, trying to fix it

Director Johan Renck believes art is best when its creation is difficult. “If I feel the labor and the gruesome process, that helps me appreciate the art,” he says, lounging on a couch in the den of his Park Slope brownstone, where he lives with his wife of six years, Elin, and their four children.

It’s mid-April, and it’s been just two weeks since Renck wrapped up post-production for the HBO limited series Chernobyl, a historical drama depicting the real-life events of the 1986 nuclear disaster. “Art is never finished,” the tall, bearded and commanding Swedish director says, a touch tongue-in-cheek....
