Women Rule podcast: How Bustle held on to its startup culture while becoming a media empire
Before it became a large media organization with hundreds of employees and more than 80 million unique monthly visitors across all its publications, Bustle was a startup based out of an apartment in Brooklyn.“I miss so much about those early days,” said Kate Ward, editor-in-chief of the Bustle Digital Group, a media company whose offerings include Romper, Elite Daily, The Zoe Report and Flavorpill.
As Bustle Digital Group grew into the large organization it is today — and as it continues to expand — Ward makes an effort to get rid of those aspects of startup culture that cause burnout. “[We’re] listening and making sure we’re giving people time off, and if they’re working overtime, giving them a breather in the morning,” she said. “We’vegotten better at that, but we’re all our own worst enemy, too. We all have to really self-monitor, and that’s the hardest thing.”
At the same time, other aspects of the startup grind are integral to the kind of workplace Bustle strives to be. There are simple things, like making it possible for even “the most junior employee” to meet privately with the CEO, Ward said. And then there are bigger things — like giving every single full-time employee equity in the company.
