The great left-handed hitter Ichiro Suzuki announced his retirement after playing in 3,604 games in the Major Leagues and Japan

Ichiro played his first professional game in 1992 for the Orix Blue Wave and nine seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball. Orix posted him and the Mariners won the bidding, signing Ichiro prior to the 2001 season. Like Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., Ichiro started with the Mariners and returned to end his career in the same place.
That left Ichiro with two choices when his team returned to the mainland after the series: bow out gracefully and retire or earn his unconditional release, the second time in 10 months the Mariners would have had to do just that.Ichiro’s swan song will occur at what is now called T-Mobil Park in exhibition games against the San Diego Padres on Monday and Tuesday.
Ichiro was in the starting lineup, batted ninth and played right field in both games, earning numerous ovations every time he strode to the plate or nimbly moved around the corner outfield spot to easily make plays. He signed late when the Mariners suffered injuries to a bevy of outfielders as spring training of 2018 began, pulled a right calf muscle early in that tour and never rounded into shape. He was released on May 3 with nine singles in 44 at bats, his .205 batting average far below his lifetime mark of .311.
