Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, has filled out his senior leadership team
, tapping a cadre of Capitol Hill veterans with experience working with Democrats across the ideological spectrum.
Jeffries, the No. 5 House Democrat, has quickly moved up the leadership ranks since coming to Congress in 2013 and is frequently mentioned by his colleagues as a potential speaker one day. Prior to being elected caucus chairman, Jeffries served as one of three co-chairs for House Democrats’ messaging arm.

Jeffries, according to a source familiar with the hiring process, made a personal commitment to his colleagues that his staff would mirror the Democratic Caucus, which is the most diverse ever after electing a historic freshman class last year — the largest Democratic gain in the House in more than 40 years, with a record number of women, including the first female Muslim and Native American lawmakers.
