Before we assume the filmmakers screwed up, let's consider that the pitch-black episode was just what they were going for.
made a big mistake. But what if they didn't? What if the episode looks exactly like they wanted it to, and what if the audience experienced it the way they were supposed to? What if 'The Long Night' is intentionally too dark to see?First and foremost, one of the central themes of the series is light versus darkness–and this episode represents the closest that darkness is going to get to winning. Our heroes are so close to losing everything that we can't see a thing.
People complaining about the darkness online were actually feeling what the filmmakers wanted them to feel: fear, confusion, anxiety, a desperate need to see. They were experiencing a battle in the middle of the night against an army of the dead. And it kind of sucks. During the battle, it's hard to see who's living or dying. It's even hard to see who's a zombie an who's not–a point that becomes even more interesting when the Night King raises the dead , transforming the fallen good guys into the enemy. It's practically the unofficial motto ofSecondly, the overwhelming darkness of the shots make contrasting light so much brighter.
And here's another consideration: what did you do when the episode started, and everything on screen was shrouded in darkness and affected by glare? I know what I did: I paused it, got up and closed the shades and turned off all of the lights so that I could see better. What did that accomplish? It left me, the audience, in complete darkness, except for the glow of the television screen, the one light source left.
To say that 'The Long Night' was too dark by accident is to say that the extremely experienced artists who made it didn't notice or didn't realize what they were doing – but it's way more likely that they thought about it
