Lessons from the #MeToo era do not appear to have made their way to children’s television.
That’s according to a new study by researchers from Rutgers University-New Brunswick and the Center for Scholars and Storytellers. A majority of main characters in American children’s fictional TV programming are male, the study found. Men also have a dominant presence behind the scenes: They create a majority of shows, and even write and direct a majority of episodes.
The study, which looked at American and Canadian shows geared at kids up to age 12 during the fall of 2017, included programming from the Disney Channel DIS, -0.43% , Disney Jr., Cartoon Network T, -0.55% Nickelodeon VIAB, -0.21% Nick Jr., PBS Kids and Universal Kids CMCSA, -0.25% in its U.S. sample. The U.S. sample covered 476 programs, 431 of which were fictional, and spanned 196 hours of recording.
While human characters in kids’ TV are “mostly positive and collaborative” and a majority of characters are shown to have equal roles, the authors found that male characters were three times as likely to be characterized as loners and twice as likely to be portrayed as leaders. Public television did a better job than commercial TV of depicting females as leaders.
Men created seven in 10 shows in the U.S. targeting children up to the age of 12 and wrote 53% of episodes. The study also found that female human characters were almost twice as likely to be depicted as people of color or racially ambiguous. “The fact that female characters are more likely to be portrayed as persons of color suggests that some shows might be trying to ‘check two boxes’ with one casting,” the authors wrote.
