Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and President of France Emmanuel Macron pictured during a family photo during the second day of the EU summit meeting in Brussels on 22 March 2019 Despite feeling the pressure of the international youth climate protests, Germany joined with Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic to block an ambitious emissions reduction plan at an EU summit in Brussels today.
France, along with the Netherlands, Spain, Luxembourg and other western and northern European governments, pushed for explicit support of the 2050 EU decarbonisation target and the 1.5°C objective in the final summit statement today. But the final text only mentions 1.5°C in relation to global efforts, not EU climate action.
