The special counsel punted on the question of whether President Trump committed obstruction of justice, leaving that matter to Barr, who was sworn in as attorney general in February. “While this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him,” Mueller wrote, according to Barr’s letter. The attorney general determined there was not enough evidence to conclude that the president had obstructed justice.
That decision drew an immediate response from Democrats. “In light of the very concerning discrepancies and final decision making at the Justice Department following the special counsel report, where Mueller did not exonerate the president, we will be calling Attorney General Barr to testify before @HouseJudiciary in the near future," tweeted Jerrold Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
The White House, meanwhile, declared victory."The special counsel did not find any collusion and did not find any obstruction,” said Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in a statement. “[Attorney General] Barr and [Deputy Attorney General] Rosenstein further determined there was no obstruction. The findings of the Department of Justice are a total and complete exoneration of the President of the United States.
Barr’s letter makes no mention of Trump’s business ties to Russia, where the president pursued a deal for a luxury skyscraper while running for office. It remains unclear whether Mueller’s full report offers greater insight into the plan. In previously filed
