Benjamin Netanyahu's reelection hopes are on hold as Israeli exit polls suggest a tight race with main rival Benny Gantz

Jerusalem Benjamin Netanyahu's hopes of securing a record fifth term as Israeli Prime Minister are on hold for the moment, after exit polls showed a tight election race with his main rival on Tuesday.

A long night of vote-counting lies ahead after the early projections showed Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party neck and neck with the centrist Blue and White party led by Benny Gantz. An exit poll by Channel 12 put Gantz's party at 37 seats to Netanyahu's 33; two other polls put the parties within a single seat of each other. Either side would have to secure the support of other smaller parties to form a governing majority in the 120-seat parliament.
