New York City mayor announces a public health emergency, involving mandatory vaccination to combat a resurgent measles outbreak
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio speaks during a news conference declaring a public health emergency in parts of Brooklyn in response to a measles outbreak, requiring unvaccinated people living in the affected areas to get the vaccine or face fines, in the Orthodox Jewish community of the Williamsburg neighbourhood, in Brooklyn, New York City, US on April 9, 2019.
"It was time to take a more muscular approach," de Mayor Bill de Blasio told a news conference as the emergency measures were announced.Under the new rules, anyone who has not received the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine or does not have evidence of immunity risks a fine of $1,000. Since October, however, 285 cases of measles have been confirmed in New York City, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . None proved fatal, but 21 patients required hospitalisation and five were admitted to intensive care.
"This is the second-greatest number of cases reported in the US since measles was eliminated in 2000," it said. The resurgence of the once-eradicated, highly-contagious disease is linked to a growing anti-vaccine movement in richer nations — which the World Health Organization has identified as a major global health threat.
Rockland County, located near New York City, has also declared a 30-day public health emergency over a measles outbreak there that has seen 168 people contract the disease, according to the CDC.
