NFL Combine participants provide evidence that location matters to talented football recruits
Michigan linebacker Devin Bush attended high school in Pembroke Pines, Florida, a 1,336-mile drive from the Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. Ask any college football coach about the most important factors that impact whether he might land a recruit and geographic distance will likely rank among the first things he mentions.
For instance, Stanford draft prospects J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and Bryce Love both selected a California college that is on the opposite side of the continent from their homes in the Carolinas. In fact, no 2019 combine participant selected a college that was farther from home than Love, whose Wake Forest High School is a 2,831-mile drive away from the Stanford campus according to Google Maps.
Michigan is the only other top-25 program whose combine attendees attended college an average of more than 1,000 miles from home – a product of the prominent program’s ability to land recruits across the country. None of the six Wolverines representing their program in Indianapolis are actually from Michigan. However, there is a Californian , a New Mexican , and two Floridians – all of whom attended high school more than 1,000 miles away from Ann Arbor.
