, started his self-help group in 1998 just outside Albany. Within a few years, Raniere, who preferred his members call him “Vanguard,” recruited people from all around the world. Among his most famous members were Sara and Clare Bronfman, the daughters of Edgar Bronfman Sr., the now-deceased heir to the Seagram’s liquor fortune. Clare Bronfman, who recently pleaded guilty to felony charges related to her involvement in Nxivm and faces two years in prison, heavily funded Nxivm.
In the early 2000s, a family from Mexico, a mother, father, three daughters and a son, moved to Albany to join Nxivm. The family wanted Raniere to mentor their children, but he wasn’t interested in mentoring, Hajjar said, “Instead, he had sex with all three of the daughters.” In 2016, the prosecution alleged, Raniere created the master-slave sex cult within Nxivm called DOS. To join the group, which was pitched as the ultimate female empowerment program, women allegedly had to submit explicit photos of themselves and also directed to reveal their “deepest, darkest secrets” that would be so distasteful if made public that “they’d rather die” than not obey their master.
When it came to DOS, the master-slave group alleged to be a sex-cult, Agnifilo said it was a secret sisterhood devoted to empowerment, like a female version of the Freemasons. When it came to the intense workout regimens and strict dieting, Agnifilo said these women “signed up” for self-improvement. “They were not there to go shopping,” he said. “They are there to make their lives better.”
