Besides his government service, Alan Krueger was known for a research paper arguing that about half of the drop in male labor-force participation was due to the opioid epidemic
Alan Krueger, the former chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers and a labor-market expert, has died at age 58, in what his family said was a suicide.
Besides his government service, Krueger was known for a research paper arguing that about half of the drop in male labor-force participation was due to the opioid epidemic. Another key paper he co-authored in the 1990s argued that minimum-wage hikes don’t lead to job losses. “He believed that if you want to know the answer to something, sometimes you have to go out and get the data yourself, something very few economists do,” added Jared Bernstein, a former chief economist to Vice President Joe Biden, in a blog post. Bernstein said Krueger’s work on the minimum wage altered to the benefit of millions of low-income workers.Chairman Kevin Hassett and the entire CEA staff are saddened to learn of Former Chairman Alan Krueger’s untimely passing.
