Palestinian president appoints ally Shtayyeh as new PM in a move seen as part of Fatah's efforts to further isolate political rival Hamas

Newly-appointed Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh speaks at his office in the West Bank city of Ramallah on March 10, 2019.

This government is instead expected to be dominated by Fatah, though other smaller parties will be represented. Hamas will not be included."Hamas stresses that it does not recognise this separatist government because it was formed without national consensus," spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said in a statement.

Abbas has recently been in conflict with US President Donald Trump's administration, which is expected to release its long-awaited peace in the coming months.Trump has since then taken a series of steps against the Palestinians, including cutting some $500 million in aid.
