Thousands of Brazilians rally on the anniversary of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's imprisonment
Supporters of Brazil's former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva demonstrate to demand Lula's freedom on the one-year anniversary of his arrest, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, April 7, 2019.
He and his Worker's Party maintain he is innocent and say he was persecuted by the judiciary and political enemies to prevent him from running for president again. The country's elites "wouldn't stop until they put possibly one of the worst Brazilians in the presidency and put one of the best Brazilians in prison," Haddad told protesters.
Meanwhile, on the boardwalk of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach, a rally supporting the attack on corruption cheered da Silva's continued incarceration.
