: A former team doctor at the Ohio State University sexually abused 177 men from 1976 to 1996, according to an independent report released Friday, which concludes that university personnel knew of the abuse for decades, but did little to stop him.
Dr. Richard Strauss molested 177 male students as an athletic doctor for decades, and even though staff knew about the abuse as early as 1979, complaints never made it outside the Athletic and Student Health departments. The abuse was “an open secret” among athletes, according to the report. The incidents included groping during examinations, showering with students and, in two instances, unwanted oral sex.
University officials outside of the Athletic and Student Health departments were first were alerted to the abuse in 1996 after students lodged complaints against him. Strauss was suspended as team doctor, but was allowed to remain a tenured faculty member for two more years. He retired in 1998 as a professor emeritus, a title bestowed to honor faculty members.
