Paul becomes the fourth Senate Republican to announce support for the disapproval resolution.
By Felicia Sonmez Felicia Sonmez National reporter on The Washington Post's breaking political news team Email Bio Follow March 3 at 2:16 PM Sen. Rand Paul is throwing his support behind a resolution that would block President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to build his long-promised U.S.-Mexico border wall, defying a warning from the president and putting the measure on track to passage.
Paul joins fellow Republican Sens. Susan Collins , Lisa Murkowski and Thom Tillis in opposing Trump’s move, a reflection of some resistance within the GOP to what lawmakers see as executive overreach and a test of the constitutional separation of powers. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell spent weeks warning against a national emergency only to declare his support for the move last month. McConnell faces reelection next year and there is concern within the GOP about being forced to choose between Trump and their self-described opposition to executive overreach.
Numerous other GOP senators have also expressed reservations about Trump’s move, among them Sens. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio , leading to widespread expectations that the disapproval resolution will easily pass the Senate.Asked about Paul’s decision, his spokesman Sergio Gor said it “speaks for itself” and declined to elaborate further.
During an interview last week with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, Trump urged Republicans not to back the disapproval resolution and said those who do so will “put themselves at great jeopardy.”
