Both Russia and the U.S. have used marine mammals for military missions, but only Moscow has claimed to have controlled them with mind powers.
Norway's discovery of a Beluga whale with what appeared to be a Russian harness strapped to it has elicited concerns that Moscow was using the marine mammal for a military mission—and it would not be the first time.
Russia was no stranger to the practice, and at one time it appeared to be a centerpiece of the Cold War-era arms receive between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Soviet Red Army trained dogs to carry anti-tank explosives, a tactic that was used extensively against the invading forces of Nazi Germany in World War II. The U.S. also reportedly began a similar program during this period, but never it never saw action. After winning the war, which also saw iconic Syrian brown bear Wojtek supporting Poland's II Corps, the two superpowers turned their attention toward recruiting another kind of animal altogether.
