Sri Lanka's president goes back on pledges to investigate war-time atrocities, saying he does not want to 'reopen old wounds'
Many expected a new era of healing and atonement when President Maithripala Sirisena took office in 2015, but progress has been slow as he cautiously balances the Tamils’ anguished demands with the persistent fears of the Sinhalese majority.
President Maithripala Sirisena said he will formally ask the United Nations Human Rights Council to reconsider a 2015 resolution which called for credible investigations into alleged atrocities. Cohabitation is a system of divided government that occurs when the president is from a different political party than the majority of the members of parliament. In the case of Sri Lanka, President Sirisena is from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, while Prime Minister Wickremesinghe is from the United National Party, the largest party in a governing coalition.
Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena listens to a speech during a Parliament session marking the 70th anniversary of Sri Lanka's Government, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, October 3, 2017. Sirisena and his government have been at loggerheads since he sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on October 26 and called a fresh election, sparking a major political crisis.
