Here's what happened during last year's anniversary of the Columbine shootings
Thousands of students nationwide streamed out of their high schools on Friday as part of a nationwide protest of gun violence, the second organized walkout since the February mass shooting at a school in Florida that left 17 people dead.
Friday’s event was tied to the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado, which killed 13. Since the shooting two months ago at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., students from that school have kicked off a nationwide movement to advocate tighter gun laws.
The first school walkout, on March 14, lasted 17 minutes—one minute for each of the Parkland victims. Friday’s walkout doesn’t have a time limit, with some students planning all-day events. In New York City, throngs of teens packed Washington Square Park, with some chanting, “Enough is enough.” Amber Key, a senior from Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens, said going to school shouldn’t be frightening. “Even doing lockdown drills is scary,” she said. “I can’t imagine being in the real thing.”Southwest incident shows how unprepared airline passengers are for in-flight emergenciesWe Want to Hear from You Join the conversation
