Summer air travel is expected to hit a record high as airlines add seats, despite the 737 MAX grounding
That may be a whopper of a mixed metaphor, but if you’re a frequent traveler or an airline or airport employee, you know exactly what that means. It’s the enormous jump in the number of people traveling during the 13-week summer vacation season.
To handle that growth in demand, U.S. carriers are expected to have about 111,000 more seats per day for travelers’ use than they had a year ago. Some of that increase in supply will come from airlines’ decisions to stuff more seats into existing planes.
Sharon Pinkerton, A4A’s senior vice president for legislative and regulatory policy, told reporters today that about 500 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have been shifted already from assignments at U.S. airports to the nation’s southwestern border , where they’re need to help out with the surging number of immigrants seeking to enter the country, in many cases illegally.
