“The Simpsons” joins radio stations and museums removing Michael Jackson following revived claims of child sexual abuse in “Leaving Neverland.”
The animated hit and America’s longest-running sitcom is pulling a classic 1991 episode from circulation that featured Michael Jackson voicing a character, joining museums and radio stations around the world that are yanking the music icon’s content.
The season three episode “Stark Raving Dad” finds Homer Simpson staying in a mental institution briefly, where he meets a man who thinks he’s Michael Jackson, who was actually voiced by the “Thriller” singer. It’s an episode considered a classic by fans, and Brooks admitted it’s had also been one of his favorites.
Jackson was acquitted on all charges related to the alleged sexual abuse of a 13-year-old boy in 2005, and long denied any claims that he hurt or molested children before his death In 2009 at age 50. The Michael Jackson Estate is suing HBO for $100 million over “Leaving Neverland” from airing, claiming that the cable network “falsely claims Michael Jackson was abusing children.”
Three major Montreal radio stations, including French-language stations CKOI and Rythme, and the English-language The Beat, have stopped playing his songs as a direct result of the allegations in the HBO documentary. “We are attentive to listeners’ comments, and last night’s documentary created reactions,” Christine Dicaire, a spokeswoman for Cogeco, the Canadian stations’ owner, said Monday in a statement.
