U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May told the House of Commons that there was still not enough support among MPs to bring her Brexit deal back for a third vote
Stanley Strangejust as the EU was, and continues to be a long-term project, so is Brexit. The success or failure of both can only be judged over years.
No Deal might cause some problems. But they are obviously only short-term and will be resolvable in months, if not weeks. We are dealing with the laws of men, not the laws of physics. Nor will those problems cause any long-lasting, non-reparable damage to the UK – we may catch a cold, but we will recover quickly.
the fundamental point is that what happens in the future is entirely unrelated to how we leave now, unless we lock ourselves into pre-existing structures and rules that restrict our choicesWhat will determine the success or failure of Brexit are the trade deals we do over the next five or ten years, what our long-term relationship with the EU is, what we do in terms of tariffs and regulation. None of these is set in stone by “crashing out” as some put it.
Currently there is no NI executive in Stormont, since the DUP and Sinn Féin cannot agree to form one. This would mean no executive to make necessary decisions in the case of no-deal. This would automatically mean restoring ‘direct rule’ in NI in the case of no-deal. Effectively this means that the UK government sets aside the NI devolved government, at a point in time when everything is already very volatile.
The most remarkable thing in my view was that she did not expressly apologise to members of the HoC. But you are right that the comment on NI not being prepared because of no executive and sitting parliament in NI. The conclusion however is that HMG and the HoC has to decide in their place. As there formally are representatives of NI in the HoC, I think you cannot call that direct rule.
