A key turning point in the fight for African-American rights came in February 1965 when a white protester was killed by the KKK. Leroy Moton, one of the only living witnesses, tells the story.

Leroy Moton was riding in a car with civil rights worker Viola Liuzzo when she was shot to death after the third Selma to Montgomery march, in 1965. By Donna Britt February 27 at 8:00 AM On the night of Feb. 18, 1965, black high school senior Leroy Moton was arrested for the “crime” of walking peacefully for half a block in Marion, Ala.

As the girl’s companion drove his car into a restaurant parking lot, Liuzzo shook her head, Moton recalls, and said, “It’s a shame how some people act.” What they noticed next was “the strangest thing,” Moton says now. All the lights along the highway that had been on when they’d driven into town were now out. “It was less than 20 minutes after we dropped off the other passengers,” he says. “Even the streetlights were off. . . .
