Breaking: President Trump said that he expects new tariffs on Mexico to take effect next week even as talks continue about stemming the flow of migrants across the border

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that a tariff on all Mexican goods will likely go into effect next week, despite a summit meeting between U.S. and Mexican officials scheduled for Wednesday.

Mexico will present its proposal in at a meeting at the White House on Wednesday that will be led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Other U.S. officials, such as U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, will be present. “Right now, our scenario is that, yes, we’ll probably have a deal, but if there were to not be one, we are prepared,” Ebrard added.

It remains unclear what it will take for the Trump administration to drop its plan to impose the tariffs. Trump has repeatedly said he wants Mexico to "immediately" stop the flow of undocumented immigrants and drugs to the border, but Mexico has already said that is not possible.
