Like other members of the pundit class who go on Bill Maher’sor even one of the late-night talk shows, Carlson thinks he’s funny enough to hold his own with people who make their livings at comedy.
Whether shows are designed to produce laughs or brainy commentary about the day’s issues, they all share this attribute. Guests tend to want to please their hosts, not by agreeing with them necessarily but by delivering a performance that will make the host glad they invited them. A guest can almost always accomplish this by serving more sizzle than expected of them—an extra-large insult, a broad exaggeration, or an unexpectedly harsh judgment.
Why did a smart guy like Carlson devote himself to five-years-worth of service on such a low-brow show as Bubba’s? Was it liberating to trade profanities with Bubba on anything-goes satellite radio, saying things he could never sneak past the censors on MSNBC and Fox? These performances parallel
