Bailey Roy, 21, and Damien Roy, 22, were charged with committing a hoax related to terrorist activity after their escapades caused a major border checkpoint to be shut down for 12 hours.
A checkpoint at the Canada-U.S. border is shown Sept. 14, 2001, in Jackman, Maine. By Antonia Noori Farzan Antonia Noori Farzan Reporter for Morning Mix Email Bio Follow March 12 at 7:10 AM The blue 1967 Buick Skylark would have been perfect for an all-American road trip.
Border brothers Damian & Bailey Roy of NS plead guilty to obstruction. Terrorism charges dropped in court in Woodstock, NB. The Can-US border closed for several hours last Oct. Their old-school navigation methods evidently failed: At around 10 a.m. on Oct. 26, they found themselves approaching one of the largest checkpoints in New Brunswick. They were less than 350 miles from their home in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and already, the journey wasn’t going as planned. Then, the border agents noticed that the back seat of the Skylark was littered with jugs of gas. They quickly backed away, closed down the checkpoint and summoned the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. A chaotic scene ensued.
Later, the Telegraph-Journal reported, the Roys told police that they had realized there was no way they would be able to illegally cross into the United States. Instead, they had decided to stop at the border “just to see how things would play out.”
