While many emerging companies partner with universities and private firms, getting together with U.S. government departments and labs is one of the most effective alliances when it comes to securing patents and investments, new research shows. The patenting activity of a startup climbed by 73% on average every time they collaborated with a government agency on cleantech development, according to a study by

authors from the Technical University of Munich in Germany, the University of Maryland in the U.S. and University of Cambridge in the U.K.The researchers also found that startups saw an 155% average increase in financing one year after they licensed a technology developed by a government agency, or more than double the amount of financing deals compared to similar startups.Governments as partners: The role of alliances in U.S. cleantech startup innovation.
