U.S. Border Patrol agents are collecting biometric data from migrant children, including fingerprints, iris scans and photographs.
The U.S. Border Patrol said it had been collecting biometric data from migrant children at the U.S.-Mexico border on a “case-by-case basis” in a bid to combat potential human trafficking.
The decision to collect biometric data from children came after repeated warnings from the Department of Homeland Security of child “recycling rings.” Acording to DHS, migrant children were being kidnapped and sent to the border with adults seeking to pose as families to help their chances of seeing their asylum claims approved.
Included in the biometric data obtained from children are fingerprints, iris scans and photographs. Fingerprints are checked against a variety of databases, both domestic and international. “This includes individuals who claimed to be a child traveling with a parent but were later determined to be 18 or over, and individuals who did not have a family-unit relationship,” Malin said.
