Why Hollywood writers are on the brink of war with their own agents:

Show-business sausage-making doesn’t get much grittier than the deals struck between writers and agents to move film and TV projects forward into production.
According to the WGA West, the convenience of packaging has metastasized into a cozy form of corruption, with agency incentives more aligned with putting together favorable deals for studios than representing the interests of their clients, the writers. They contend that agents sometimes hold up or scuttle deals for clients if packaging terms fall through, and don’t push hard enough for salary increases for mid-level writers.
Consequently, the organization is pushing for a complete ban on agency packaging in the franchise agreement currently under negotiation, a condition that would fundamentally change the landscape of the 21st century entertainment business.
