A candidate’s age could affect voters’ decisions — but should it?

Age may be more than just a number when it comes to being leader of the free world. Not all Americans want an older president, but 43% of the current contenders are in their mid- to late-60s — and some are in their 70s.

Sanders, who is an Independent Vermont senator, despite his Democratic presidential run, and Biden have already addressed their age. Appearance may be more important than the actual age in some cases, political experts said. There isn’t much research on how age impacts voters’ decisions on Election Day, but it wouldn’t be unusual for voters to question a candidate’s longevity if they appeared out of shape or fragile, said Raymond La Raja, a political-science professor at University of Massachusetts Amherst.
